Macroplastics
Large plastic debris, readily visible, with a size greater than 5 mm. They typically include rigid or flexible plastic packaging and components, as well as fishing gear such as nets and ropes. They are distinguished from microplastics by an operational size threshold (≤ 5 mm for micro; > 5 mm for macro), used for measurement, monitoring, and management. Size influences leakage pathways, impacts, and collection techniques; over time, macroplastics can fragment and generate microplastics.
