Mangroves trap waste before open waters, but plastic can weaken roots, biodiversity and coastal resilience.
Overview
Mangroves grow at the edge of land and sea, where rivers, tides, mud and coastal life meet. They are among the most important natural barriers for coastal ecosystems: their roots slow water, hold sediment, shelter marine life and reduce the impact of waves and storm surges. But the same structure that makes mangroves protective also makes them vulnerable to marine pollution. When waste is trapped among the roots, it does not disappear: it accumulates, stresses the ecosystem and can weaken the barrier that helps protect the coast and the Ocean.
A barrier under pressure
Mangroves create protection through density. Their roots form a living grid that slows the movement of water, stabilizes muddy soils and creates sheltered areas where young fish, crabs, molluscs and other species can feed and grow. In coastal areas exposed to tides, storms and river runoff, this root system works as natural infrastructure.
This role is ecological, physical and social at the same time. A healthy mangrove can support biodiversity, reduce coastal erosion, improve habitat quality and sustain local livelihoods connected to fishing. When the roots are open and alive, they create space for species to move, reproduce and find shelter. When the mud is stable, the coast is less exposed. When fish and crustaceans return, local communities can see the effect directly in the water and in the catch.
The contradiction begins with waste. Mangroves slow what moves between land and sea. That includes sediment and organic matter, but also bottles, bags, packaging, fishing lines and mixed debris carried by rivers, tides and rainfall. During the rainy season, this movement can intensify: waste from inland areas is pushed downstream and can become trapped before reaching open waters.
This does not mean that mangroves “solve” marine pollution. It means they absorb part of its pressure. Plastic caught among roots can cover mud, reduce oxygen exchange, obstruct young plants and lower habitat quality for the animals that depend on the forest. The more waste mangroves trap, the more their roots are stressed; the more their roots are stressed, the less effectively mangroves can protect coastal ecosystems.
This is the vicious cycle. Mangroves are essential because they protect biodiversity, coastlines and communities. One of the ways they protect the Ocean is by slowing and trapping what water carries. But when what they trap is plastic and mixed waste, their protective function becomes a source of stress. A natural barrier becomes a pollution hotspot. An ecosystem that should support life starts to suffocate under the material it has intercepted.
This is why mangrove protection cannot be separated from waste management. Preventing leakage remains the priority, because waste should not reach rivers, coastal areas or mangrove forests in the first place. But where waste has already accumulated, careful collection is necessary to relieve pressure on the ecosystem and prevent further fragmentation into microplastics.
Ogyre where roots meet waste
Ogyre works in mangrove areas where waste accumulation is not only a visible pollution issue, but a direct pressure on a living coastal ecosystem.
In Batu Lumbang, Bali, Ogyre’s work takes place within a mangrove area where waste accumulates among roots, mud and shallow waters. Collection is carried out with local fishers, who move through the mangrove forest by kayak to reach areas difficult to access. So far, the project has contributed to the preservation of 85,000 m² of mangroves and to a 50% increase in fishing capacity, with local observations also reporting the return of species such as crabs.
In Guanabara Bay, Brazil, Ogyre operates in a closed coastal basin where river flows continuously carry urban waste toward the bay. Part of this waste accumulates among the mangroves, especially at low tide, when root systems emerge and form dense “islands” where plastic and mixed materials remain trapped. This makes removal complex: waste is concentrated in sensitive areas, difficult to access and beyond what local waste management systems can handle alone. Ogyre’s work responds to this operational gap by removing waste where accumulation is highest, while creating an additional source of income for the local community involved in collection.
In both areas, the goal is not to treat mangroves as natural waste filters. It is to prevent that function from weakening them. Waste trapped among roots is collected, documented and directed to the best available end-of-life solution, prioritizing recycling when possible and responsible disposal when materials are too degraded or contaminated. In this way, mangrove protection becomes part of a wider recovery chain: ecosystem care, traceability and local participation working together, beyond one-off cleanup actions.
Keeping the barrier alive
Mangroves protect the Ocean by standing in a difficult place: between rivers and tides, land and sea, waste flows and living habitats. Their roots slow water and hold the coast together, but they can also trap plastic that should never have entered the environment. This makes mangroves both a barrier and a warning signal.
Protecting them means acting on both sides of the cycle. Waste leakage must be reduced before it reaches coastal areas. At the same time, the waste already trapped among roots must be removed and managed properly, so the ecosystem can keep performing its natural role.
Mangroves do not need protection because they are useful to waste management. They need protection because they are living coastal ecosystems. Their ability to intercept waste is only one part of their function, and it becomes dangerous when pollution overloads the system. Keeping mangroves healthy means keeping the natural barrier alive before it becomes another place where plastic accumulates.
