Marine plastic

Since “marine waste” is largely composed of plastic, often accounting for around 85% or more of the total, Ogyre often refers to it as “marine plastic” as a general term. However, marine waste can also include smaller amounts of metals, glass, rubber, textiles, paper, fishing gear, and other human-made materials. Its sources are both land-based and sea-based, originating from urban, industrial, tourism, agricultural, shipping, and fishing activities.

Once released or left unmanaged, marine plastic (or “marine waste”) can accumulate and pose a threat to marine ecosystems, biodiversity, coastal communities, and economic activities connected to the sea.
