Local community

Local communities are groups of people living in coastal areas, near waterways, or in environments connected to marine pollution pathways who take part in the hands-on collection of waste as part of Ogyre’s Ocean-bound Waste Collection Activities (see Ogyre Protocol for more details).

Within Ogyre’s model, local communities are involved in intercepting waste before it reaches rivers, seas, or the Ocean, especially in areas where waste management systems are ineffective, absent, or unable to prevent leakage into natural environments.

Their role is essential because they bring local knowledge, proximity to the affected areas, and direct understanding of the environmental and social challenges linked to waste accumulation. By participating in collection activities, local communities help reduce marine pollution while generating measurable environmental and social impact.

Their contribution is recognized and remunerated through Ogyre’s model, creating economic opportunities and supporting a wider human infrastructure for Ocean preservation.

All activities involving local communities must be carried out under fair, safe, and respectful working conditions, in line with the Ogyre Code of Conduct.
